Why Your 401(k) Matters More Than You Think
A 401(k) is arguably your most powerful retirement savings tool. Contributions are pre-tax (Traditional) or after-tax with tax-free growth (Roth), investment gains compound without annual tax drag, and employer matching is the closest thing to free money in personal finance.
2026 401(k) Contribution Limits
- Employee contribution limit: $23,500
- Catch-up contribution (age 50+): $31,000 total ($7,500 additional)
- Total with employer match: Up to $70,000
- Roth 401(k) limit: Same as traditional ($23,500)
How to Find Index Funds in Your 401(k)
Log into your 401(k) provider's website and look at the investment options. You're looking for:
- Funds with "Index" in the name
- Funds tracking the S&P 500, Total Market, or similar broad indexes
- Expense ratios below 0.20% (ideally below 0.10%)
Common index fund options in 401(k) plans include Fidelity Spartan 500 Index (FXAIX), Vanguard Institutional Index (VINIX), Schwab S&P 500 Index, BlackRock Equity Index, and their various total market equivalents.
The 401(k) vs. IRA Priority Order
- Contribute enough to get your full employer match (free money)
- Max your Roth IRA ($7,000 in 2026)
- Go back and max your 401(k) ($23,500)
- Invest additional money in a taxable brokerage account
What If Your 401(k) Has No Good Index Funds?
Some employer plans offer only expensive actively managed funds. In this case: still contribute enough to get the full employer match, then max your Roth IRA with better fund options at Fidelity or Vanguard. After maxing the IRA, return to contributing to the 401(k) despite the limited options — the tax deferral still adds value even with higher-cost funds.
