The Best ETFs for Beginners in 2026
With thousands of ETFs available, beginners often get overwhelmed by choice. The truth: you only need 1-3 ETFs to build a diversified, low-cost portfolio that can outperform most professional investors over time. Here are the best options.
Category 1: U.S. Total Market ETFs
These ETFs own essentially every publicly traded U.S. company — about 3,500-4,000 stocks. They're the broadest, simplest way to invest in the entire U.S. economy.
- VTI (Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF) — 0.03% expense ratio. The gold standard. $1 minimum.
- SCHB (Schwab U.S. Broad Market ETF) — 0.03% expense ratio. Identical to VTI in practice.
- FZROX (Fidelity Zero Total Market) — 0.00% expense ratio. Only available at Fidelity. Literally free.
Category 2: S&P 500 ETFs
These ETFs own the 500 largest U.S. companies. Slightly less diversified than total market funds but historically nearly identical performance.
- VOO (Vanguard S&P 500 ETF) — 0.03% expense ratio
- IVV (iShares Core S&P 500 ETF) — 0.03% expense ratio
- FXAIX (Fidelity 500 Index Fund) — 0.015% expense ratio. Mutual fund, not ETF, but functionally identical.
Category 3: International ETFs
Add global diversification to a U.S.-only portfolio.
- VXUS (Vanguard Total International Stock ETF) — 0.07% expense ratio. Owns ~8,000 international stocks.
- FZILX (Fidelity Zero International) — 0.00% expense ratio. Only at Fidelity.
The Simplest Portfolios
- One fund: 100% VTI (or FZROX at Fidelity)
- Two fund: 80% VTI + 20% VXUS
- Three fund: 60% VTI + 20% VXUS + 20% BND (Vanguard Total Bond Market)
